Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function according to the Mayo Clinic. Every hatha yoga posture is composed of threads of awareness which, through intention, become lines of action. Performing a yoga posture is about finding and holding those lines of action, and the shape of the posture follows. In this class, simple postures will be deeply explored as a way for you to more fully experience being in your body. Jan 6 – March 24, Mondays, (skip 1/20 & 2/17), 6-7:15p.m. Fred Dowd, Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor. 12.5 HRs

This class is for yogis who want to deepen their practice, or for anyone who has body awareness through another discipline and wants to refine that awareness (such as Pilates, dance, or martial arts).

Each yoga posture opens and strengthens a specific part of the body. All of the postures together form a complete system of strength and flexibility, balancing the structure of your body to enhance the circulation of blood, lymph and energy. As your body is trained to be balanced, your mind is also trained to be aware of the degree that your body maintains that balance. Your mental focus reinforces your physical healing and creates a greater sense of clarity.

“Freedom in a posture is when every joint is active.  Let us be full in whatever posture we are doing.  Let us be full in whatever we do.”  B. K. S. Iyengar.

Wondering if this is the right yoga class for you? Go ahead and register, and attend the first class. If it’s not a good fit, contact us before the second class session and we’ll be happy to give you a full refund.

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Perform basic hatha yoga postures with greater focus and deeper understanding
  • Identify actions common to all postures
  • Demonstrate equal and opposing actions that are characteristic of hatha yoga postures
  • Describe how the muscles in the legs can allow greater freedom in the spine
  • Demonstrate how to use the breath to further deepen into postures
  • Demonstrate inverted postures appropriate to your capacity

Course Notes: Yoga mats, blocks and straps provided but you may wish to bring your own.   Wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing. Some prior yoga experience is recommended but not required.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 15. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
