Course Notes

The Perinatal Support Group Facilitator Training is an intensive 21 hour workshop focusing on skill development to lead thriving new mother support groups to support perinatal emotional health in your community.  The MotherWoman Group Model© creates an environment of support and personal empowerment, enhancing a mother’s capacity to advocate for herself and her family.  Participants gain core elements of the MotherWoman Group Model for replication and skills to maximize leadership capacity in diverse settings and with diverse groups of mothers.  The MotherWoman Group Model can be replicated in a variety of sites and incorporate specific program curricula.

You'll learn to:

  • Support mothers across the spectrum of perinatal mood disorders
  • Create safety for sharing authentic experiences of motherhood
  • Gain expertise in leading and sustaining support groups and confidence in discussing mood disorders with women and professionals who serve them
  • Explore cultural messages and myths about motherhood
  • Lead a culturally competent support group that welcomes diverse mothers
  • Encourage group participants inherent strength and resilience
  • Motivate personal and social change by linking socio-political factors to maternal depression

What Students Say

“This training not only gave me the skills necessary to run a group right away, it gave me a deeper understanding about the social and cultural issues that impact women and how I, as a support group facilitator, can help women overcome them. It’s not just about helping women to survive, it’s about helping women to value themselves enough that they can thrive!” - Aida Perez, Children’s Trust Fund Parent Advocate National Awardee

“What I love about the MotherWoman Group Model is its structure and adaptability. We can add curricula and content appropriate for the women we work with and still have the benefit of a consistent model that creates safety and allows sharing to go deeper. It also gives the facilitators a structure to follow that works every time. Our goal is to use it in all our groups now.” - Debra Bercuvitz, Director of FRESH Start, a recovery and parenting program for pregnant and postpartum moms.

"The material Annette & Liz presented was well organized, the class was structured beautifully and I was inspired for all 3 days that I was there. I feel 100% ready to start a perinatal group in my area!" - Crystal Gurney, mother of 8, New Moms Group Facilitator, Seattle WA

The MotherWoman Perinatal Support Group Facilitator Training is an outstanding combination of both content and practicum.  Annette and Liz offer a sound, thorough, compassionate and thoughtful approach in sharing the MotherWoman Model, creating a deep personal and professional experience and making sure that participants leave with the confidence and skills to run high quality groups.” - Heidi Koss PSI WA
