The health of the body begins in the brain, but where does the health of the brain begin? Discover the answer in this interactive multi-media presentation focused on educating and experimenting with ways of restoring your optimal well-being by feeding your body, brain and spirit. You will learn how cutting-edge nutritional science and social and affective neuroscience can suggest small, doable steps that will result in dramatic changes in your overall body chemistry. You will explore the interdependencies of mental, physical and spiritual health, and the unique applications for improving each of these aspects of your life. You will learn how small and thoughtful shifts can dramatically strengthen cognitive function, ultimately reduce stress, enhance relationships, and restore vitality. 

In addition you will: 

  • Discover what optimal well-being means for you and how it can support lifelong pursuits.
  • Identify the minimal somatic and neurological foundations required for feeling good.
  • Discover three ways disorganized brains seriously compromise your body’s signals and four methods for relearning to restore and trust your body’s capacity for optimal functioning.
  • Describe how emotional upsets and physical pain can be cues that healing is trying to happen.
  • Learn a variety of ways the innate intelligence of the heart, brain, mind and body are continually striving towards greater connection and integration.

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Identify and articulate the essential, interconnected nature of body, brain and spirit
  • Discover brain and body-based practices that support spiritual emergence
  • List three ways that stress undermines health and spiritual well-being
  • Describe three behaviors that interfere with optimal neuro-somatic integration
  • Identify the nature of “spiritual bypass” and how to effectively address it
  • List four ways you can express more joy and “brilliant sanity” in your daily life

Mark Brady PhD was an extremely successful Bay Area homebuilder for 25 years. He also spent 10 years at one of the nation's premier think tanks: The Center for Advanced Study at Stanford (as the maintenance man). He's a self-taught brain educator, primarily because neuroscience research was only in its infancy when he completed two Master's Degrees and his PhD in transpersonal psychology.

For the last 10 years Mark has focused his work primarily toward parents of young children after studying the work of physicians like Robert Scaer and Gabor Mate, along with the ACEs Study by Kaiser Permanente. This research showed that early childhood experiences have profound impact on body, brain and spirit across the whole lifespan. He is the author of many books and papers: A Little Book of Parenting Skills; Safe and Secure: A Guide to Parenting with the Brain in Mind; How Parents Screw Us Up (Without Really Meaning To); The Wisdom of Listening; and A Father's Book of Listening. Erin Everett, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) and health educator, teaches the preventive and healing power of food and lifestyle shifts that support our vitality and health.  Her mission:  to change the way people think about nutrition and “de-myth-tify” the information about what truly is good for the body and why.  She promotes eating for pleasure, and demonstrates how eating properly-prepared, nutrient-dense, real food can help us reach our full human potential.  Having received her certificate of basic cuisine from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France, Erin offers whole foods cooking classes to individuals and groups, and educating clients on how to select and prepare food that is simple, delicious and nourishing. Erin has lectured as an Assistant Instructor for the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA) and around the community to clients and health care practitioners on how real nutrition increases energy, prevents disease and directly improves health.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 184. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
