My research interests focus on the control of cancer through the modulation of nutritional and lifestyle factors. In particular, my group studies the role of specific amino acids, vitamins, phytochemicals, alcohol and exercise in the control of growth, invasion and metastasis of several cancers including melanoma, prostate, breast and colon cancer.
My laboratory employs techniques pertaining to gene cloning and expression, differential display, Northern blot analysis, immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis, flow cytometry for cell cycle and apoptosis assessment, reporter gene assay, immune assays, cell motility, growth and invasion assays and in vivo methodologies for assessing tumor growth and metastasis.
I am the director of the Cancer Research and Prevention Center, whose membership includes 40 scientists from WSU, Batelle Northwest Laboratories, and the University of Idaho. The research areas of the center are: diet, nutrient and healthy lifestyle; development of novel therapies; host:tumor interactions and metastasis; tumor immunology; carcinogen and antineoplastic drug metabolism; growth factors, hormones and oncogenes in tumor cell signaling; cell cycle regulation and apoptosis; radiation and environmental toxicants; and quality of life issues in cancer patients and family members.
