As the Director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition (CPHN) and the Exploratory Center for Obesity Research (ECOR) at the University of Washington, I work with interdisciplinary teams to address the obesity epidemic. My current research interests are in integrating nutritional epidemiology with Geographic Information System (GIS) technology in order to map the key features of obesogenic neighborhoods. This work on obesity and social disparities addresses the dietary and environmental reasons why the highest rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes are observed among minorities and the working poor. I also conduct research on the impact of taste, cost, and convenience on food preferences and eating habits. A third area is the development of nutrient density standard that can be used by regulatory agencies, health educators, and consumers to identify a "nutritious food."
