About Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research
What is BIORC?
Founded in 2009, Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center is a research program with the goal of evaluating the effectiveness of Integrative Oncology care in our cancer patients. We anticipate that men, women and children with cancer who receive Integrative Oncology care will live longer and healthier lives.
What is Integrative Oncology?
Integrative Oncology care is defined as comprehensive support for each stage of a cancer patient’s experience (from diagnosis to treatment decisions and restoration of immune function and health after completion of standard treatments). Patients can receive care from licensed naturopathic physicians, nutritionists and acupuncturists, all of whom have advanced oncology training.
Treatment options include mind/body medicine, acupuncture, botanical medicine and nutritional support. In Integrative Oncology care doctors communicate with each participant's medical and radiation oncologists to ensure truly integrated care. The goal is to improve not just the quality of life of people living with cancer, but also to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
What are current studies?
1. The Bastyr Integrative Oncology Outcomes Study: Evaluating Outcomes in Patients Receiving Integrative Oncology Care (Sponsored by Bastyr University Research Institute)
This observational study seeks to describe the outcomes for individuals who choose to receive integrative oncology care. We will report on clinical outcomes of our patients in terms of whether cancer comes back after treatment (recurrence rates) and survival. We are also interested in identifying therapies recommended to our patients and length of hospice stay when applicable. You will not directly benefit from the study, but information gathered during the course of this study may help us begin to assess the longer-term effects of integrative naturopathic, traditional, Chinese and palliative medicine on cancer patients.

2. Breast Cancer Integrative Oncology Study - Prospective Matched Controlled Outcomes study is funded by NIH/NCCAM and conducted by Bastyr University Research Institute and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
This study is ongoing but not recruiting new participants.

Our research partnership with the Hutchinson Center will tell us how our participants do over the long term and help us to continuously improve our care and therapies.
How do I participate in the study and receive Integrative Oncology care?
Contact Bastyr Center for Natural Health for a new patient appointment. To participate in the study you will want to schedule an appointment in Practitioner Care which offers one-on-one visits with a specific licensed naturopathic provider. If you do not wish to participate in the study but still receive Integrative Oncology care you may make an appointment in Team Care where you will be seen by a licensed naturopathic provider and two advanced student clinicians.
