Dr. Yarnell is a full-time core faculty member in the Department of Botanical Medicine in the School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University. In addition to teaching many courses related to botanical medicine, he also teaches urology, gastroenterology and rheumatology. A prolific writer, Dr. Yarnell is the author and co-author of several textbooks including Naturopathic Urology and Men's Health, Naturopathic Gastroenterology, Clinical Botanical Medicine 2nd ed, and Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy: Modern Herbal Medicine, 2nd ed. He writes a regular column on herbal medicine for the journal, Alternative & Complementary Therapies. Formerly the chair of botanical medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and the senior editor of the The Journal of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Yarnell is currently chief financial officer of Healing Mountain Publishing and vice president of Heron Botanicals.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Yarnell has a focus on urology, nephrology and men's health, with a special interest in prostate cancer. He employs a holistic approach, addressing diet, lifestyle and emotions, and providing appropriate natural treatments while working to maximize the effectiveness of conventional therapies. He is currently working on a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded training grant investigating the efficacy of naturopathic care for men with prostate cancer.
Dr. Yarnell's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in natural health sciences from Bastyr University in 1994 and a doctoral degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in 1996.
