Bastyr University Opens New Integrative Oncology Research Center in 2009Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center (BIORC) opened in February 2009 at Bastyr University's beautiful and serene campus in Kenmore, Washington. This integrative oncology center utilizes state-of-the-science and state-of-the-art naturopathic and traditional Chinese medicine treatment and integrated management of cancer in research participants. The new center provides comprehensive support and treatment for each stage of the participant's experience, from diagnosis, treatment decisions, and restoration of immune function and health after completion of standard treatment.
Our goal is to improve not just the quality of life of people living with cancer, but also to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. With a grant from Cleavage Creek Winery, Bastyr University Research Center in collaboration with a researcher from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle will do a matched controlled outcomes study. This study will compare the 'disease free survival' and quality of life in participants who are treated in the new Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center to similar cancer patients living in Washington State who do not include complementary, alternative or integrative therapies. We anticipate that men, women, and children with cancer who are treated at the Bastyr oncology clinic will live longer and happier lives. Our research partnership with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will tell us how our participants do over the long term and help us to continuously improve our care and therapies.
