Bastyr University Names New Dean of School of Naturopathic Medicine

Kenmore, WA — Bastyr University is pleased to announce the appointment of Jane Guiltinan, ND, to dean of the School of Naturopathic Medicine effective Sept. 28, 2009. A practicing naturopathic physician for 23 years, Dr. Guiltinan graduated from Bastyr University in 1986 and completed two years of residency training at Bastyr Center for Natural Health, the University's teaching clinic.

Dr. Guiltinan is currently a clinical professor at Bastyr University, teaching gynecology and providing clinical supervision for naturopathic medical students. Previously, she served for 12 years as medical director and dean of clinical affairs at the university's teaching clinic. She has also served as the co-medical director for the King County Natural Medicine Clinic, the first publicly-funded integrated health clinic in the United States. In addition to leading several research studies at both Bastyr University and the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle, Dr. Guiltinan was the medical director for the Healing AIDS Research Project, a clinical research trial studying naturopathic therapies for HIV/AIDS.

In 1998, Dr. Guiltinan was the first naturopathic physician in the United States appointed to the board of trustees at a public hospital. She is currently serving her third term as a board member at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Guiltinan's medical practice is focused on women's health, disease prevention and wellness promotion.

"I am confident that Dr. Guiltinan is the best individual to lead the School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University," said Timothy C. Callahan, PhD, senior vice president and provost at Bastyr. "Her enthusiasm and expertise have played a role in shaping the naturopathic medicine profession for more than 15 years. As the field continues to evolve, Bastyr is privileged to have Dr. Guiltinan's vision to help us further the University's work in educating future health care leaders."

Throughout Dr. Guiltinan's prestigious career, she has presented at both international professional and public conferences, including a presentation to a committee of the British Parliament. She shared the Blackmore International Award for Outstanding Research in Natural Medicine in 1990 and was named 1995 Physician of the Year by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She was elected to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians Board of Directors in 2002 and served as president from 2006 to 2007. In 2008, Dr. Guiltinan received Bastyr University's Joseph E. Pizzorno Jr. Founder's Award for distinguished service to the University and the naturopathic medicine profession.
