NEWS RELEASE BASTYR UNIVERSITY RECOGNIZED BY NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION FOR EXEMPLARY AND COMMITTED SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES IN HIGHER EDUCATIONUniversity recognized for excellent recycling program, commitment to green building August 27, 2008 – (Kenmore, Wash.) Bastyr University is pleased to announce it has been recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as an exemplary and committed school in its 2008 National Report Card on Sustainability in Higher Education. The University was highlighted for its outstanding recycling and composting program, as well as its commitment to future green building and landscaping on campus. Bastyr University is currently in the planning process to construct low impact two story, on campus residences to house 120 students. The eco-friendly residences, connected by a series of garden paths, courtyards and outdoor living spaces, are carefully designed to be energy-efficient and to fit into and enhance the campus' natural environment. The residence halls will also positively affect the University’s carbon footprint by alleviating transportation impact on surrounding roads. The University's outstanding recycling and solid waste program includes a highly effective composting process, in which almost anything used in the cafeteria, including the "plastic" plates and cups (derived from corn) are composted and returned to the University's renowned herb garden as nutrient-rich soil. The composting process comes full circle when the herbs and other produce grown in the garden are harvested and used as ingredients in the cafeteria. "Bastyr University is honored to be recognized by the National Wildlife Federation for our commitment to sustainable practices," said Daniel K. Church, PhD, Bastyr University president. "Recognition from this prestigious national organization has reassured and encouraged us in our long-term journey toward reducing Bastyr University's environmental impact and in our ongoing efforts to teach our students to live sustainably." More than 1,068 colleges and universities across the country participated in the survey, which resulted in the report card. Bastyr University is among more than 240 schools nationwide recognized in the report for having exemplary levels of sustainability activities, as determined by survey responses. The National Wildlife Federation 2008 Report Card data provides ideas for enhancing sustainability at any school or business. It is designed to inspire further effort to improve environmental performance and literacy at all schools.
