BASTYR PROFESSOR HONORED WITH
PRESTIGIOUS PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP AWARD

Sheila Kingsbury, ND, becomes the first naturopathic doctor to receive the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington's MaryAnn O'Hara, MD, Physician Leadership Award

Kenmore, Wash. — Bastyr University's Sheila Kingsbury, ND, RH (AHG), Chair of the Department of Botanical Medicine, was recently named the recipient of the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington's 2009 MaryAnn O'Hara, MD, Physician Leadership Award.

The award honors a medical student, resident or physician who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to maternal and child health through advocacy of breastfeeding education in the community and within the medical profession. Dr. Kingsbury is the first naturopathic doctor to be named to the award, given through the Department of Public Health and WithinReach programs. Past awardees include Ellie Graham , MD, MPH, a pediatrician at Harborview Medical Center and an associate professor of pediatrics in the University of Washington medical system, and Jay Fathi, MD, chief of family medicine at Swedish Medical Center.

"This is a great honor, which Dr. Kingsbury fully deserves," said Gannady Raskin, MD, ND, dean of Bastyr's School of Naturopathic Medicine. "Her leadership and courage reflect a commitment to breastfeeding as a vital part of the health and development of children and their families."

Dr. Kingsbury, a Bastyr's graduate, teaches numerous naturopathic and herbal science courses and supervises a pediatric clinical shift at the University's teaching clinic, Bastyr Center for Natural Health. She also currently serves as chair of the Seattle-King County Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington and maintains a private clinical practice in Kirkland, where she focuses on pediatric and women's health.
