Bastyr University is pleased to co-sponsor "The Good Life: Books for Better Living," a year-long series of moderated discussions with notable authors about what it means to live well. "The Good Life" is a production of Kim Ricketts Book Events and The Warren Report and is co-sponsored by Bastyr University, Tom Douglas’ Seattle Kitchen, Theo Chocolates and Conscious Choice Seattle. Each event in the series is hosted at the stylish Palace Ballroom in downtown Seattle. Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report will lead the onstage conversations, with audience questions and participation encouraged. The "good life" begins with appetizers and mingling when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The events conclude with book signings by the authors and confectionary samplings by Seattle's own Theo Chocolates. Beverages are available from a cash bar.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.kimricketts.com, www.thewarrenreport.com, or by calling the Book Events office at (206) 632-2419. A copy of each author’s new book is included in the ticket price.

THE DISCUSSION SERIES CONTINUES JUNE 25 with author and urban farmer Novella Carpenter. After graduating from the University of Washington and studying journalism at Cal Berkeley under Michael Pollan, Carpenter moved into a ramshackle house in inner-city Oakland. Next door was a weed-choked, garbage-strewn abandoned lot, but Carpenter closed her eyes and pictured heirloom tomatoes, a beehive and a chicken coop. What started out as a few egg-laying chickens led to turkeys, geese, rabbits, a few Nigerian dwarf goats and two three-hundred-pound pigs. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees share the corner with homeless people, prostitutes and some truly unforgettable characters (both animal and human) as urban meets rural in the most surprising ways in her book Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. For all of us who have ever considered leaving it all behind and becoming a farmer, consider her story both a humorous cautionary tale and a poignant call to action.
