Sports Medicine Club, AOM students, volunteer their talents at Seattle Marathon
The 2008 Seattle Marathon proved another successful event — and fertile training environment — for the Bastyr Sports Medicine Club. Comprised of students in the naturopathic medicine (ND) degree program, the club provided post-race care and support for more than 200 of the race's record 12,400 runners. The club offered race participants a variety of free services, including stretching, massaging, taping and naturopathic manipulation. Students in the acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) program also volunteered at the race, focusing their treatments on helping athletes recover from fatigue and injuries.
"We put our physical medicine skills to use serving our community and promoting Bastyr, all while having a good time," said Chris Merlino, Sports Medicine Club organizer. "We gave our time and service free of charge, but were paid with the gratitude and appreciation of all those we helped."
By volunteering at events such as the Seattle Marathon, Bastyr students help promote both their degree programs and the healthcare services offered at the University's state-of-the-art teaching clinic in Seattle, Bastyr Center for Natural Health. This was the fifth year Bastyr University faculty or students have provided services at the Seattle Marathon.
