Bastyr University researcher to evaluate CAM models of pain management
Wendy Weber, ND, PhD, MPH, research associate professor at Bastyr University, was recently named to a national steering committee charged with establishing a practice-based research network (PBRN) that will assess complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) models of pain management.
In October the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration awarded a grant for $310,479 to the Palm Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) in Davenport, Iowa, to implement the project. The chiropractic school then formed the CAM-PBRN Steering Committee and gave it the long-term goal of establishing a large, pain-focused, practice-based research network of CAM providers who systematically collect health outcomes assessments from their patients and track that information.
Weber was selected for the committee in part because of her previous work in evaluating the effectiveness of CAM treatments. Weber was recognized last month with the University of Washington’s prestigious 6th Chapter Award for her research surrounding the use of St. John's wort as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Joining Weber on the national steering committee are CAM leaders from a variety of disciplines, including: Carlo Calabrese, ND, MPH, National College of Natural Medicine; Mitch Haas, MS, DC, Western States Chiropractic College; Richard Hammerschlag, PhD, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine; and Patricia Herman, ND, PhD, from the University of Arizona.
