Bastyr University Mothers Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week a group of breastfeeding moms and babies gathered on in the Bastyr University courtyard on Friday, August 8, 2008, for a photograph that will be included in the "Breastfeed Washington" picture project. Area residents were challenged by the Breastfeeding Coalition of Snohomish County to "Breastfeed Washington" by gathering breastfeeding families in small (or big) groups all over the state. Pictures of breastfeeding moms from all over the state will be collected at the annual Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington meeting and turned into a collage celebrating breastfeeding moms and babies in Washington. The collage will also be shared with the Department of Health and WithinReach, an organization connecting Washington residents with the programs, resources and information necessary to build healthy families, to show how prevalent breastfeeding is in Washington.
Washington and Oregon are currently ranked the top two states in terms of the number of children who are breastfeed and how long they are breastfed. They also provide new mothers with more breastfeeding education and resources than anywhere else in the United States.
