Ayurveda: A 21st Century Medicine

Here are some reasons to consider visiting an ayurvedic practitioner.

Ayurveda is a traditional East Indian holistic medical science and science of life. It has been continuously practiced for several thousand years. It does not view human beings from a biochemical, molecular or biomechanical perspective, but from an “energy” perspective. Each person is a unique expression of energy expressed through material body and mind.

Ayurveda originated in India more than three thousand years ago. Even in those days, ayurvedic science included internal medicine, pediatrics, toxicology, head and neck surgery, general surgery and geriatrics medicine as well as rejuvenation therapies.

Here are some reasons to consider visiting an ayurvedic practitioner:

  • Ayurveda helps people achieve balance and wellbeing, through dietary guidelines, yoga, meditation, herbal supplements, massage and other physical therapies including “bliss therapy” (Shirodhara), gentle cleanses and detoxification therapies
  • It is a holistic medicine that considers body, mind and spirit. Its aim is to prevent illness, restore health and balance, and increase longevity using natural methods.
  • It is cost effective, with few side effects, and it is very effective in chronic medical conditions and health problems.
  • It uses gentle cleansing and detoxification therapies to remove the causes of disease.
  • It is useful in reducing stress, improve immunity and promote healthy aging.
  • It is an individualized, customized approach to improve your health.
  • Being a holistic medicine, it address health at all levels, including physical, psychological, spiritual, social and environmental.

The National Ayurvedic Medical Association website can help you find competent ayurvedic professionals in your area. There is also a regional organization, the Washington Ayurvedic Medical Association (WAMA) that has useful information on its website. It is hosting a second annual ayurveda fair for the public on October 11. Check its website for details this fall.
