Bastyr University to Host Innovative Children’s Healthy Lifestyle Program

The APPLE Core workshop engages the entire family to prevent childhood obesity.

Bastyr University is bringing back an innovative program aimed at teaching families the importance of healthy lifestyles in an effort to prevent and reduce the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic. The Active Pediatric and Parental Lifestyle Education (APPLE) Core  program takes place Saturday, August 11, 2012, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Bastyr University campus in Kenmore, Wash. Hosted by the Bastyr University Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science and with support from  LifeWise Health Plan of Washington and Regence, the program focuses on healthy lifestyle choices for children and their families.

"Bastyr University is taking steps to improve the health of our nation’s youth," said Tiffany Reiss, PhD, APPLE Core director and director of the Exercise Science and Wellness program at Bastyr University. "To do so, we need to educate not only children but also their parents about healthy lifestyle behaviors such as eating right, preparing healthy foods and exercising together. The whole-family approach is what makes this program unique."

Participating families will spend quality time together learning about health, nutrition and exercise in a supportive, educational setting.  As part of the day’s activities, parents will receive a lesson in how to shop for healthy groceries, and parents and children will learn how to prepare a healthy meal together as a family. The hands-on, interactive program will promote healthy living using a holistic approach that includes:

  • Fun and instructive whole-food nutrition education, with acclaimed chef Maxime Bilet
  • Behavioral counseling for the child and family
  • Family-oriented physical activity and health education
  • A family cooking class
  • Lunch will be provided
  • Each family will receive T-shirts and a QFC gift card for purchasing healthy groceries

The APPLE Core program has a few openings left for those interested in being part of this one-day program, at a cost of just $15 per family. To be eligible, children should be between the ages of 8 and 12, and parents must complete a registration and health history questionnaire form.
