2003 Herb and Food Fair Delights the Palate

Owing partly to favorable weather, the sixth annual Bastyr University Herb and Food Fair was a huge success. The university welcomed over 2,000 people to campus on May 10 for a day of herb- and food-related activities.

The visitors were treated to many sights, sounds, tastes and smells. Particularly popular this year were the cooking demonstrations. It was standing-room-only in the beautiful new teaching kitchen as guests learned about creative cooking with grains, unique vegetarian appetizers, East Indian cuisine and how to cook with Chinese herbs. But the question remains: were people really learning cooking techniques, or just waiting for the samples afterwards?

The focal point of this annual fair is our medicinal herb garden, which grows bigger and more beautiful each year. The tours, which are guided by either a faculty member or an advanced student, are always popular. Participants, under the careful instruction of a tour guide, stop to taste, smell and touch the plants while they learn about medicinal herbs and the healing power of nature.

The university was particularly lucky this year to feature two outstanding keynote lectures. Internationally known author and herbalist Dr. Mary Bove came from the East coast to share her knowledge of herbs, particularly as it applies to treating children. Dr. Bove’s presence also attracted the attention of the news media, with both Seattle Magazine and The Seattle Times running stories about her and the fair. The second keynote address was by two of Bastyr University’s own faculty, Scott Murdoch, PhD, and Cynthia Lair, authors of a new book Feeding the Young Athlete. Their lecture about how to get kids to eat healthy food was well attended.

Several other experts presented talks and held workshops on a variety of herb-related subjects and plenty of visitors took the opportunity to educate themselves. Others simply strolled through the vendor displays, stopped and enjoyed the live entertainment, had lunch in our cafeteria and indulged in a myriad of family-friendly activities.

All in all, it was a splendid day at Bastyr and a delight to welcome our neighbors, friends, fellow gardeners, and those interested in learning more about natural medicine. Next year’s event is already set for Saturday, May 15, 2004, and promises to be bigger and better than ever. It will feature keynote speaker Rosemary Gladstar, an internationally-known herbalist. We hope to see you there. For more information, contact Kathleen Warren at 425.602.3107.
