AGRICOLA
Created by the National Agricultural Library, AGRICOLA is a bibliographic database of citations to agricultural literature, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences. There are two databases: Online Public Access Catalog (books, serials, audiovisuals) and Journal Article Citation Index.
Cochrane Library Reviews
This site provides links to abstracts of all Cochrane reviews. The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization, aims to help people make well-informed decisions about healthcare by preparing and maintaining systematic reviews. In 1996, the Complementary Medicine Field was established to meet the increased demand for evidenced-based complementary and alternative medicine.
EthnoMedicinals for Research and Development
This is a project of Catalyst Consultants, a firm specializing in natural products research and development, and Web database design. The director, Anthony Torkelson, is the author of the CRC Press four-volume set, "The Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants," a unique reference, which allows matching of scientific, and common names through a comprehensive cross-index. Information on natural products used in human and animal health, an extensive taxonomy database, links to other taxonomy and botany web sites, links to nutrition sites including legislative information, and a directory of pharmacognosy sites including safety of herbal products, veterinary resources and medicinal biologics databases.
Herb Research Foundation (HRF)
The Herb Research Foundation, a nonprofit research and educational organization focusing on herbs and medicinal plants, provides a comprehensive survey of herbal news worldwide, and monitors legislative developments in the U.S. The News & Views category has extensive free (referenced) articles on current and controversial topics. HRF offers custom fee-based reference services.
IBIDS (NIH)
Produced by the Office of Dietary Supplements. Published scientific literature information on dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, and botanicals. Search one of three databases: Consumer, Peer-reviewed, or full IBIDS. Over 639,000 scientific citations.
Longwood Herbal Task Force ( LHTF)
The LHTF was organized in the fall of 1998 by Boston Children’s Hospital, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to learn more about and teach clinicians about herbs and dietary supplements. The LHTF has no affiliation with herb, drug or supplement manufacturers, and does not accept grants or donations from the pharmaceutical industry. In-depth monographs have extensive references to scientific studies; thorough patient education sheets on various botanical substances are available.
MEDLINE (PubMed)
Free biomedical database from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) providing citations and abstracts to scientific research articles, and linking to full-text journal articles at web sites of participating publishers. National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
In 1998, Congress established the NCCAM at the National Institute of Health (NIH). "The NCCAM conducts and supports basic and applied (clinical) research and research training on CAM." An important part of its mission is to communicate information on complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) to the public and healthcare providers. The NCCAM and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) partnered to create CAM on PubMed, a subset of citations relating to complementary and alternative medicine. Research Council on Complementary Medicine (RCCM)
The RCCM was founded in the United Kingdom in 1983 in order to conduct and promote research into complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and to disseminate the results. There is free limited access to the CISCOM Research Database. You can request a full search of the database for $30. RCCM is not government funded. A comprehensive site with extensive research information.
