    A comprehensive site with three major categories: TCM Therapies, TCM in the 21st Century, and Resources. This site also has a built-in search engine. Useful categories include State Laws, In the News, and Book and Software Reviews. Links for students, practitioners, and patients.

    AGRICOLA
    Created by the National Agricultural Library, AGRICOLA is a bibliographic database of citations to agricultural literature, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences. There are two databases: Online Public Access Catalog (books, serials, audiovisuals) and Journal Article Citation Index.

    Alternative Medicine Homepage
    A clearinghouse of complementary and alternative medical (CAM)health information and resources. This site aims to help individuals make informed decisions when selecting CAM modalities or therapies by providing links to online databases, government resources, practitioner directories and related links such as Health Information for the Consumer via Health Sciences Library System, University of Pittsburgh.

    American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges
    Established in February 2001, the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC), actively supports the accredited and recognized schools of naturopathic medicine.

    American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)
    "Founded in 1985, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) is the national professional society representing naturopathic physicians who are licensed or eligible for licensing as primary care providers." Overview of naturopathic medicine, history, education/licensing, and a directory of practitioners.

    American Association of Oriental Medicine (AAOM)
    AAOM, formed in 1983, promotes the acceptance of Oriental medicine as a complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapy. The organization also served as the "springboard for the creation of the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists." A directory of practitioners by state. No free access to publications.

    American Botanical Council (ABC)
    The American Botanical Council, incorporated in 1988, is the leading nonprofit educational and research organization disseminating science-based information that promotes the safe and effective use of medicinal plants and phytomedicines. This site provides an Herb Reference Guide for commonly used herbs, educational resources for professionals, subscription information and sample articles from the HerbalGram publication, and an extensive catalog featuring over 300 books, monographs and software in the fields of botany, ethnobotany, research, food/nutrition and herbal education literature.

    American Chiropractic Association (ACA)
    Full-service professional association for chiropractors. There is also an affiliated student association. Limited full-text access to JACA: Journal of the American Chiropractic Association and other publications.

    American Dietetic Association (ADA)
    The ADA is the nation's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. This site provides information on accreditation for dietetics education, career opportunities, and brief access to current and past issues of the Journal of the American Dietetics Association. The Knowledge Center provides extensive links to resources such as the Food Guide Pyramid, Nutrition Fact Sheets, associations and global nutrition sites, and a referral directory to registered dietitians. The online products and services catalog lists a multitude of books, videos and self-study publications, with special member pricing.

    American Herbal Products Association (AHPA)
    Founded in 1983, the AHPA is the national trade association and voice of the herbal products industry. Herbal FAQs, Resource Links and Press Room are useful. News and other information are accessible only to members.

    American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA)
    The mission of the AMTA is to increase awareness of massage for health and well-being. Extensive information for practitioners as well as anyone interested in the practice of massage. A massage therapy research database provides the latest information on the efficacy of massage and specific techniques. An online job network is provided for members, with information for nonmembers to subscribe. Links to information about the workings of the Association, board of directors, standards of practice, lists of schools, and much more.

    Arbor Nutrition Guide
    Dr. Tony Helman, a physician and nutritionist based in Australia, is editor-in-chief of this site. It is intended for qualified health practitioners. An array of nutrition-related sites including alternative medicine

    Bastyr Center for Natural Health
    Affiliated with Bastyr University, one of the world's leading centers of natural medicine education and research. Staffed by health care teams that include advanced students under the supervision of Bastyr's clinical faculty, the center provides a teaching vehicle for the university as well as quality health care.     Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine
    Established in January 2000, offering British Columbia's first specialist training in Naturopathic Medicine. The program is four years duration, 12 terms totaling over 5000 hours, including 1400 hours of clinical practice and 300 hours in preceptorship."

    Burzynski Clinic
    The Burzynski Clinic offers an alternative treatment to chemotherapy called antineoplaston therapy, reported to be safe and nontoxic. Data on the Web site from clinical trials supports the therapy for brain tumors.

    Canadian College of Naturopathic ND News
    Free newsletter compiled by the Learning Resources Centre at CCNM. Research reports, conferences, events, journal citations, and other items of interest. Archives available but not searchable by subject.

    Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA)
    Cancer Treatment Centers of America, with five locations, combines traditional and new therapies such as biological and immunotherapy. Nutritional, psychological, and spiritual support are important components of the treatment. Some of the centers customize naturopathic treatment programs for patients.

    Chinese Medicine Times
    "Free online Chinese medicine journal for practitioners, students & public."

    Citizens for Midwifery
    Nonprofit, grassroots organization founded in 1996 to promote the "Midwives Model of Care." For an overview, download the brochure. State-by-state legal status information, directory of midwives, news, and resources.

    Cochrane Library Reviews
    This site provides links to abstracts of all Cochrane reviews. The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization, aims to help people make well-informed decisions about healthcare by preparing and maintaining systematic reviews. In 1996, the Complementary Medicine Field was established to meet the increased demand for evidenced-based complementary and alternative medicine.

    Consumerlab.com
    Consumerlab claims to provide independent test results verifying the contents of brand name health, wellness, and nutrition products. Test results for some brand name products are available for free but full results are provided only to subscribers.

    Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases
    These databases contain information on the activity of chemicals in plants, and ethnobotanical uses for plants. Databases are searchable by plant(scientific or common name), chemical (e.g., ascorbic acid), or activity (e.g., antiviral).

    Dr. Robert Svoboda (drsvoboda.com)
    Dr. Robert Svoboda was the first Westerner to graduate from a college of Ayurveda (in 1980) and be licensed to practice Ayurveda in India. He is an adjunct faculty member at Bastyr University and has written a number of books on all aspects of Ayurveda, most of which are available for sale at this site. His site also provides a series of articles on Ayurveda and an extensive list of related links.

    Drepung Loseling Monastery
    Established by the 250 monks who survived the Chinese communist invasion of Lhasa, Tibet in 1959. This monastery, located in Karnataka, South India, preserves their ancient traditions.

    EthnoMedicinals for Research and Development
    This is a project of Catalyst Consultants, a firm specializing in natural products research and development, and Web database design. The director, Anthony Torkelson, is the author of the CRC Press four-volume set, "The Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants," a unique reference, which allows matching of scientific, and common names through a comprehensive cross-index. Information on natural products used in human and animal health, an extensive taxonomy database, links to other taxonomy and botany web sites, links to nutrition sites including legislative information, and a directory of pharmacognosy sites including safety of herbal products, veterinary resources and medicinal biologics databases.

    Flora Lamson Hewlett Library
    The Flora Lamson Hewlett Library is one of the largest theological libraries in the United States which, together with the branch library at the San Francisco Theological Seminary, holds over 600,000 books, periodicals, microforms, audio and video cassettes, and other media. In addition to the library materials and databases, there are extensive Internet resources for the various traditions, listing national and international organizations, research institutes and resources, educational institutes, reference books and databases, and journal and indexing resources.

    Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC)
    Located at the U.S.D.A. National Agricultural Library, this site has links for food safety and composition, dietary supplements, dietary guidelines, food pyramids, and other resources. The Consumer Corner has nutrition and food topics most frequently requested from the public.

    Harvard School of Public Health: The Nutrition Source
    Timely information on diet and nutrition for clinicians and consumers. The article titled "Interpreting News on Diet" provides practical information on how to make sense of the research on diets reported in the media.

    Heal-WA
    "HEAL-WA is a collection of health information resources funded by license fees from selected health care providers in Washington State. Its mission is to provide evidence-based information to support patient care." Click on the "HEAL-WA Access" button at the upper right hand corner of the screen to log in. If you need to set up a UW NetID and password, see Getting Started. Specific CAM databases include AMED, Alt-HealthWatch and Natural Standard. Additional CAM resources will be added. Only licensed practitioners in the state of Washington listed on the left-hand side are eligible to access this portal.

    HealthWorld Online
    Despite the commercial look (there are lots of ads beyond the main page), this consumer-oriented site has informative overviews of therapies and conditions. The extensive list of health conditions provides research articles from industry experts in many modalities, and the directory of practitioners is comprehensive. The Nutrition, Fitness and Wellness Centers offer many articles of interest such as dietary supplements, disease prevention and links to related organizations and resources.

    Help for IBS.com
    The "mission is to offer education, support, and help that allows people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome to successfully manage their symptoms through simple, safe and effective lifestyle changes." Click on IBS Research Library on the upper right, and choose a category. Heather Van Vorus, the founder of HelpForIBS.com, is the author of several books on the subject.

    Henriette's Herbal Homepage
    “Herbal medicine and culinary herbs: one of the oldest and largest herbal information sites on the net.” Includes electronic versions of historical texts.

    Herb Research Foundation (HRF)
    The Herb Research Foundation, a nonprofit research and educational organization focusing on herbs and medicinal plants, provides a comprehensive survey of herbal news worldwide, and monitors legislative developments in the U.S. The News & Views category has extensive free (referenced) articles on current and controversial topics. HRF offers custom fee-based reference services.

    HerbMed
    The Alternative Medicine Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 to provide responsible and reliable information about alternative medicine to the public and health professionals. HerbMed is an interactive, electronic herbal database, which provides hyperlinked access to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health. It is an evidence-based information resource for professionals, researchers, and the general public. Each monograph provides human clinical data including case reports, mechanism of action, traditional folk use, contraindications and toxic and adverse effects, related links to PubMed Medline database abstracts, pictures and other web site links.

    Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians (HANP)
    HANP is affiliated with the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and is dedicated to excellence in homeopathic education, offering board certification in classical homeopathy to qualified naturopathic physicians. Their quarterly publication, Simillimum, presents case studies, materia medica, industry news and discussion of practical applications of homeopathic concepts. The annual HANP Conference brings together distinguished homeopaths to present cases and promote the advancement of classical homeopathic practice.

    Homeopathy Home
    A useful commercial site which provides a wealth of information, including links to research-based sites, homeopathy books online, recent news, articles, journals and an online discussion forum. The list of services and suppliers includes practitioners, books and videos, computer software and remedies. The worldwide resources page offers links to suppliers, texts online, associations and other links to alternative and complementary medicine sites.

    IBIDS (NIH)
    Produced by the Office of Dietary Supplements. Published scientific literature information on dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, and botanicals. Search one of three databases: Consumer, Peer-reviewed, or full IBIDS. Over 639,000 scientific citations.

    Keeping Current: a Clinical Research Guide for Naturopathic Physicians
    Geared toward naturopathic physicians, this guide offers tips and suggestions for managing information and keeping up with clinical research.

    Linus Pauling Institute
    The Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University is an NIH/NCCAM Center of Excellence for Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Their mission is to determine the function and role of vitamins, minerals and medicinal plant chemicals in promoting health and preventing and treating conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and neurogenerative dieases.

    Longwood Herbal Task Force ( LHTF)
    The LHTF was organized in the fall of 1998 by Boston Children’s Hospital, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to learn more about and teach clinicians about herbs and dietary supplements. The LHTF has no affiliation with herb, drug or supplement manufacturers, and does not accept grants or donations from the pharmaceutical industry. In-depth monographs have extensive references to scientific studies; thorough patient education sheets on various botanical substances are available.

    Medfinds
    A comprehensive resource for clinical information relating to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), as well as Provider and School Finders. Includes access to HealthNotes, for patient information, and Clinical Essentials, an evidence-based database offering the latest CAM research from key medical journals.

    MEDLINE (PubMed)
    Free biomedical database from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) providing citations and abstracts to scientific research articles, and linking to full-text journal articles at web sites of participating publishers. To search for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, click on Limits, then Subsets, and select Complementary Medicine.     Complementary and alternative medicine focus on the latest news, research studies, clinical trials, etc.

    Moss Reports
    Dr. Moss, Ph.D., has written extensively about cancer and has authored several books on the topic. He was a founding advisor to the National Institute of Health's Office of Alternative Medicine (now the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine). This site is consumer-oriented. Search the archives of the Cancer Chronicles, a newsletter featuring articles on popular topics published by Dr. Moss from 1989 to 1998.

    National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
    In 1998, Congress established the NCCAM at the National Institute of Health (NIH). "The NCCAM conducts and supports basic and applied (clinical) research and research training on CAM." An important part of its mission is to communicate information on complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) to the public and healthcare providers. The NCCAM and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) partnered to create CAM on PubMed, a subset of citations relating to complementary and alternative medicine. Click on "CAM on PubMed" for additional information.

    National Center for Homeopathy (NCH)
    Information for the general public and the practitioner. Professional associations, resources, and a directory for locating homeopaths. The Introduction to Homeopathy page is a good starting point for people who are new to this system of medicine. Research has citations for meta analyses, peer-reviewed journal articles, and books on research.

    National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM)
    NCNM, located in Portland, Oregon, is the oldest accredited school of natural medicine in North America.

    Native American Ethnobotany
    "A database of foods, drugs, dyes and fibers of Native American peoples, derived from plants." Sponsored by the University of Michigan--Dearborn.

    Natural Choice Directory of Puget Sound
    Web version of the print directory of environmentally and socially responsible resources available in the Puget Sound region. Feature articles include topics such as "Antibiotics Resistance" and "Socially Responsible Investing: Putting Your Money Where Your Heart Is." Extensive listings include Holistic Health Fitness and Body Work, Natural Food Markets & Restaurants, Natural Remedies and Products, Bookstores, Counseling, Education and Spiritual Resources.

    NPIcenter (Natural Products Industry Center) provides access to business-related Web content, news and services concerning the production of alternative health products. NPIcenter contains listings for over 5500 companies in this industry and thousands of pages of content and links to key resources from around the world.

    PubMed (MEDLINE)
    To limit your search to complementary and alternative medicine therapeutics for a particular health condition, click the Limits button under the PubMed query box and select Complementary Medicine from the Subsets menu.

    Research at Bastyr University
    A fundamental part of its mission, "research at Bastyr University aims to investigate, evaluate, and develop the principles and practices of natural, integrated and complementary medicine." Current and completed studies, recruitment for future studies, and CAM research training opportunities.

    Research Council on Complementary Medicine (RCCM)
    The RCCM was founded in the United Kingdom in 1983 in order to conduct and promote research into complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and to disseminate the results. There is free limited access to the CISCOM Research Database. You can request a full search of the database for $30. RCCM is not government funded. A comprehensive site with extensive research information.

    Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Center for Complementary and Alternative Information
    The Rosenthal Center was one of the first centers at a major medical school devoted to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research, education, and training. Extensive annotated links for consumers and practitioners. Primary categories include Women's Health Resources, Breast Cancer Citations, Directory of Databases, Botanical Medicine, Aging Resources, and CAM Medical School Courses.     Rocky Mountain Herbal Institute (RMHI)
    The RMHI is a private educational and research organization offering professional training in Chinese herbal sciences since 1987. The institute offers courses to professionals and the general public, publishes textbooks on Chinese herbology, provides healthcare to the public and conducts research projects. This site offers informative articles on Chinese herbology, clinical reports and healthcare politics, plus free access to the TCM HerbLibrary, a database of over 220 herbs of the Chinese material medica. Extensive links to databases and directories of herbal and health resources, practitioner referrals, TCM links, discussion groups and book distributors.

    Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM)
    "Founded in 1992, SCNM educates in the art and science of naturopathic medicine to prepare students to be conscientious and caring health care providers. The mission of the College is to prepare students to become naturopathic physicians educated and trained in the principles and practice of naturopathic medicine and to serve the public by providing quality education, research and natural medical care."

    Southwest College Research Instititute (SCRI)
    SCRI serves the public by conducting clinical trials, disseminating valuable information on CAM issues, and educating physicians, researchers and other health care advocates. Projects, (current and completed), research news, and upcoming events.

    Southwest School of Botanical Medicine
    Created by Michael Moore, a prolific author. This site contains interesting texts, and a long list of botanical woodcuts, images, and illustrations.

    SusanLove.MD.com: The Website for Women
    Dr. Susan Love is a well-respected surgeon, author, researcher, and breast cancer activist. Extensive information on issues affecting women including breast cancer, menopause, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, heart disease, and exercise. Limited information on complementary and alternative therapies pertaining to breast cancer, menopause, and hormones. Click on "Take Charge of Your Health" from the main page.

    The Ayurveda Institute
    Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. "Established in 1984 to teach and provide the traditional therapy of East Indian Ayurveda including herbs, nutrition, panchakarma cleansing, acupressure massage, yoga, Sanskrit, and Jyotish (Vedic astrology)." Most of the topics are taught by Dr. Vasant Lad, who brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the institute and has authored several books on the subject.

    The Candian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM)
    Established in 1978, CCNM offers Canada's only accredited four-year, full-time professional program in naturopathic medicine.

    The Council on Naturopathic Medical Education
    The Council on Naturopathic Medical Education's mission is to ensure the high quality of naturopathic medical education in the United States and Canada through the voluntary accreditation of four-year, graduate-level programs that lead to the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D. or N.M.D) or Doctor of Naturopathy (N.D.) degree.

    Maintained by the Alternative Medicine Foundation, Inc., this site has a browsable library of Q & A's pertaining to specific medical conditions. Resources for the professional including conferences, courses, and events. Interesting related links.

    Touch Research Institutes
    The Touch Research Institute was established in 1992 and was the first center in the world devoted solely to the study of touch and its application in science and medicine. A team of researchers, representing Duke, Harvard, Maryland and other universities, provides research abstracts for massage, tai chi and yoga, showing the numerous beneficial effects on health and well-being.

    United Plant Savers
    "A non-profit education corporation dedicated to preserving native medicinal plants."

    University of Bridgeport: College of Naturopathic Medicine
    "A non-profit, co-educational professional institution which grants the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.) degree to graduates who successfully complete four academic years of study including clinical training. The program is offered on a full-time basis with no students admitted to a part-time course of study."

    Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG)
    A comprehensive Web site produced by the non-profit organization VRG Group, geared toward the consumer. Click on Frequently Asked Questions to get an idea of the breadth of the site. Recipes, travel information, nutrition information and excerpts from the Vegetarian Journal, produced by VRG.

    World's Healthiest Foods (George Mateljan Foundation)
    The non-profit George Mateljan Foundation publicizes scientific information about the benefits of healthy eating. The World's Healthiest Foods: A-Z list, found under eating healthy, contains a wealth of nutritional detail and research for specific foods.

    Yahoo's Alternative Medicine Links
    Extensive list of alternative medicine related sites from A to Z. The categories are not annotated but the site listings have short ones. If you don't know exactly what you're looking for or you just want to browse, this is a good place to begin. Primarily consumer-oriented, but there are some sites for practitioners. An excellent place to search for organizations, institutions, associations, schools, and basic information about therapies.
