Welcome to Bastyr News!

Welcome to wintertime! This issue can help you create a better winter season, as it includes information about how to participate in an NIH-funded study on colds and flu in children; natural health tips to help you stay free of headaches, banish skin problems and evade the latest bug that's circulating; and the lowdown on classes we offer that will expand your knowledge of the healing arts.

For those who struggle with depression during the winter, take note of the upcoming weekend class, Natural Approaches for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). And, since eating too much sugar contributes to mood swings, we've included a recipe for fruit compote with nut cream that can alleviate your sugar cravings while keeping your energy levels steady. Have a peaceful and healing season … naturally!

In health,

Bastyr Played Prominent Role at National HerbDay
At this year's national HerbDay festivities at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, DC, on October 12-14, Bastyr University had a significant presence, offering talks on the medicinal and culinary uses of herbs. Robin DiPasquale, ND, RH (AHG), chair of the Bastyr University Department of Botanical Medicine, was the keynote speaker on Friday, October 12. Her talk was entitled, "The Spiritual Dimensions of Herbs" and she gave two additional talks over the weekend. Two senior students in Bastyr's herbal sciences program accompanied Dr. DiPasquale on the trip to DC and spoke on topics including, "Ten Kitchen Herbs" and "Herbs for the Liver." DiPasquale notes that, "The students gave incredible talks and it boosted their confidence as budding herbalists." Meanwhile, Bastyr University celebrated national HerbDay by hosting a week of workshops and lectures on the Bastyr campus.
