Welcome to Bastyr News!
Whether you consider it good news or bad news, fall is now upon us. So, why not make the best of it and focus on the new opportunities this season brings? As the hot sun begins to recede, the cooler weather encourages us to retreat indoors to pick up more cerebral or domestic pursuits. For example, fall can be a great time to read a new book, perhaps even one that can advance your career goals, such as the one we feature in this issue, A Guide to Starting Your Own Complementary Therapy Practice.
Or it may be a great time to enroll in an adult education class (see a list of them below). If you'd like to attend a fascinating lecture about herbs, be sure to catch a presentation by Ed Smith, the founder of HerbPharm, who has ventured around the world studying the folk and medicinal uses of plants. Or perhaps you feel like spending a cozy evening at home baking cookies that are both tasty and healthy. This issue includes a recipe for quinoa cookies that fit that description. And, last but not least, it's time to start thinking about holidays – especially that one that brings pure childish fun: Halloween! Bastyr University's annual event, Haunted Trails, is a unique and entertaining way for the whole family to celebrate this holiday. Find out about all of this and more in this issue.
Here's to your health and learning this fall,

Landmark Botanical Authentication Conference Premiers at Bastyr University
When it comes to choosing herbal supplements such as Echinacea, ginkgo or St. John's wort, not all brands are created equally. This is due to evolving industry standards that are still being refined. To work toward a standardized way of verifying the authenticity of herbal products, leading researchers, clinicians, educators and government officials gathered at Bastyr University in late August in the first conference of its kind, "The State of Science of Botanical Authentication." At the conference, stakeholders evaluated different methods of authentication of botanicals and discussed issues such as contamination, reference materials and documentation. A summary of outcomes of the conference will be published in a peer-reviewed journal soon. Read more about the significance of the conference.
