Welcome to Bastyr News!
As spring turns to summer, we at Bastyr find there's more to celebrate than
the return of sunshine. We just added nearly 260 people to the ranks of our
graduates, and we wish them well as they transform people's health and the
health care system. In this issue, you'll see stories of
earlier graduates who are good models for these new graduates as well as researchers
making their mark in the CAM field. You'll also read about the successes our current
students have had in their national exams and internship placements, which show us
that we're not just helping people "do good," but also to do well at it! And
speaking of wellness, we've included a few articles and tips on how to improve your health.
Enjoy this issue -- and the summer!

Awarded Four "Enviro-Stars"
This spring, Bastyr was recognized for its conservation efforts when it
became the first university in the state of Washington to receive a
four-star ranking (out of five) by EnviroStars of King County's Local
Hazardous Waste Management program. The ranking is based on Bastyr's use
of green cleaning products, low-toxicity/low-VOC paints, the practice of
recycling printer cartridges and cell phones, its composting systems, and
campus clubs geared at environmentalism. Find

Hunter
"Patch" Adams Speaks at Bastyr's Graduation
At the Bastyr University commencement exercises,
held Monday, June 19, nearly 260 people received
academic degrees, a third of which were doctorate
in naturopathic medicine (ND) degrees. President
Daniel K. Church was pleased to confer degrees upon
members of the first doctoral class in acupuncture
in Oriental medicine. Hunter "Patch" Adams,
MD, author, peace activist, medical clown and advocate
of health care for the needy, addressed this year's graduating
class as the keynote speaker and received an honorary
ND degree. Read a review of the ceremony at the
San
Francisco Chronicle or a press
release for more about Dr. Adams.
Bastyr Students Excel in Professional Exams and Placements
Good news! Test results from the 2005 national acupuncture
certification exam just arrived, and Bastyr students
had an average pass rate of 98 percent on their first
try--a rate significantly higher than the national
average. In another coup, Bastyr's 31 dietetics students
this year had a 100 percent placement rate into dietetic
internships all over the country. Our dietetic students
competed with students all over the U.S. for the
internships. Congratulations to all of these students,
and kudos to Bastyr's
great faculty and solid curriculum! Read

this.

Get Another Perspective on Weight Loss
Wanting to be thinner, but not quite there yet? In your search
for solutions, it's easy to fall prey to eating plans that offer
quick fixes. Bastyr nutritionists offer many good tactics for
managing weight without following the latest fads. Read recently
published articles in Seattle
Woman and AARP
Magazine. that explain how to achieve satisfying, sane
and successful eating for the long haul.
Probiotics
Linked to Better Health
Probiotics are gaining ground as a promising addition to your
supplement regimen. Recent studies have shown that this supplement
boosts immunity. Bastyr instructor Sheryl Berman explains, in a
recent Alternative Medicine article, that studies also link
probiotics to a variety of other health benefits. Read
the article to find out more.
High
Calcium Intake May Lower Blood Pressure
A little extra calcium may be just what the doctor will order
to help bring down high blood pressure, according to a May 4
report published in the Journal of Human Hypertension. The
authors of the report concluded that supplementing with about
1,000 mg of calcium each day could significantly reduce blood
pressure. Get
more details.
Complementary
Medicine is on the Rise
If you haven't been to a naturopathic doctor, acupuncturist,
massage therapist or prayed for healing purposes,
you are now in the minority. A survey published in
2004 showed that complementary medicine is being
used by 62 percent of people, and even insurance
companies are jumping on board, providing more coverage
for complementary practices. The ranks of practitioners
is also growing, so it's a great
time to train for these careers. Read
an article about these trends on msn.com.
Study Shows Vitamin D May Help Prevent Cancer
Few of us worry about how much vitamin D we get each day,
but that may change soon, if recent research results are
any indication. Vitamin D's protective health effects are
being discovered in droves. For instance, according to a
recent study published in the April 5 issue of the Journal
of the National Cancer Institute, a vitamin D deficiency is
associated with an increased risk for cancer, particularly
of the gastrointestinal tract. Study authors wrote, "If the
promise of vitamin D holds, a brief walk in the sun may turn
out to be a step toward cancer prevention." Source: Medscape Medical News
Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements May Help Relieve Neck and
Low Back Pain
If the side-effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
have you worried, you'll be glad to know that an alternative therapy
for pain shows great promise: omega-3 fatty acids. A study published
in April's Surgical Neurology showed that after one month, patients
with back and neck pain who were taking omega-3s experienced significant
relief. In fact, 59 percent of patients stopped their NSAIDs and 80
percent reported satisfaction with their level of improvement in pain.
