Welcome to Bastyr News!
As a new school year begins, many new and exciting possibilities
are afoot here at Bastyr. We just welcomed our new president,
Dr. Daniel K. Church, who brings to us a wealth of experience in education
and health care. At the same time, our 25-year master plan is revised
and we've hired
some great new faculty members. But in a time of transition,
it's always
nice to continue past traditions, so we're
planning another hair-raising Haunted Trails event
and also offering some informative classes for the public,
such as Kitchen Medicines for Colds and Flu, which is back
by popular demand.
Amidst all of the exciting changes for us, our hearts go out to all hurricane
victims and survivors. We have been working on many fronts to lend support,
including offering a special tuition discount for displaced students. After
all, our tagline is "at the heart of natural medicine," so it's the perfect
time to show our "heart."
Enjoy this issue, and be well!

For Hayfever, Butterbur is Better
The next time hay fever season rolls around, another treatment should be considered as a viable remedy: butterbur. A study published in the August issue of Phytotherapy Research confirmed the herb butterbur as a worthy alternative to antihistamines for treating hay fever symptoms. In an article in Forbes magazine and healthday.com, Bastyr University's Dr. Eric Yarnell discusses the study, which was the largest ever conducted on butterbur's effects on hay fever.
Acupuncture May Help Overactive Bladder
If you're a woman with bladder problems, acupuncture just may be the answer you've been waiting for. In a randomized study, women who received four weekly bladder-specific acupuncture treatments had significant improvements in bladder capacity, urgency, frequency and quality-of-life scores, according to the results of a study published in July's issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The authors conclude, "In this study, acupuncture had a significant short-term effect on overactive bladder, similar in scope to the improvement offered by drug therapy and physical or behavioral therapy." Women Seeking Good Night's Sleep
Sleep disorders are a major concern for society, and almost all sleep disorders are more prevalent in women. In the article, Bastyr University's Dr. Jane Guiltinan discusses the "awareness" factor, which she says needs to be increased in both patients and physicians, who don't always realize how far-reaching the sleep problem really is.
