Faculty Spotlight: Bastyr Hires Obesity Researcher
Formerly a researcher at Tufts University who was quoted in
The Oprah Magazine’s
August 2004 article titled "How to Eat," Megan McCrory is a new research associate
professor in the nutrition and exercise science departments at Bastyr. She
will teach part-time, but her primary focus will be conducting studies

Alumni Spotlight: Acupuncture Graduate Runs Successful Practice
An Omaha, Nebraska native who graduated in 1994 from Bastyr’s acupuncture program, Anne Jeffres has a very successful practice in Bellevue, Washington, where she enjoys facilitating deep healing in her patients. Read more about her.
Program Spotlight: A Well-Rounded Exercise Science and Wellness Education
Our unique bachelor’s completion program in exercise science and wellness provides a well-rounded education. The program includes biochemistry, nutrient metabolism and whole-foods nutrition, while encouraging practical experience through internships in everything from resistance training to wellness education. Bastyr Unveils Reflexology Foot Path
A new reflexology foot path, the first of its kind in North America, is now nestled in the fields behind Bastyr. Prevalent in public parks in Asia, reflexology foot paths help boost immunity and vitality by stimulating various zones of the foot. Bastyr’s foot path was built by volunteers with funding from our generous donor Helen Higgen. Please come visit our campus and walk the path while enjoying the serenity and beauty of our herb garden.

University Plans Center for Women’s Health Care
Women and natural medicine are such natural companions that Bastyr University is looking into the creation of an innovative health center for women. Currently in the planning and development stages, the center will be a collaborative program, combining both conventional and natural medicine approaches and offering comprehensive services including primary care. Fertility treatment, treatment for menopausal concerns, and cancer care will take center stage, as well as other conditions primarily affecting women. Preventive care and patient education will be emphasized, as well as women’s health research. Stay tuned for more information.
Learn More About Childhood Vaccinations
Vaccines have become a controversial topic, with many parents questioning their safety. Bastyr’s continuing education course, Childhood Vaccinations: Making an Informed Choice, to be held Saturday, October 2, provides parents with an overview of vaccines from a non-biased perspective. Dr. Alicia Gonzalez will help parents explore the benefits and potential harmful effects of childhood vaccinations from the perspective of the latest medical research. Find out more and register.
Create Kitchen Medicines for Colds and Flu
On Saturday, October 23, learn how to prepare and use simple herbal remedies to help yourself and your family to thrive during the cold and flu season. The class, Kitchen Medicine for Colds and Flu, will focus on ingredients and methods that are readily accessible in the average home kitchen. Participants will learn to make and receive recipes for teas, steams, syrups and other preparations that are palatable to both adults and children. Get more information and register.

Join us Saturday, November 13, to learn about natural ways to care for and heal your pet with foods. Gardening with Ciscoe will Feature Bastyr’s Garden
During August, local gardening guru Ciscoe Morris brought anchor Meeghan Black and the King-5 TV crew to Bastyr’s herb garden and botanical medicine lab to shoot segments for an upcoming Gardening with Ciscoe feature. Ciscoe interviewed some of Bastyr’s staff as he toured the garden and discussed the basics of herbs as medicine. His trademark warmth and good humor will likely make for a fun segment showcasing Bastyr’s garden and botanical medicine department. The show is tentatively scheduled to run on Saturday, October 16, at 10:30 a.m. on King 5 TV.
Health Care Careers Highlighted in Puget Sound Business Journal
Wondering where all the jobs are these days? According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, 16 percent of payroll jobs created in the 2002-2012 period will be in health services. The journal’s August 9 article, "Schools Prepare for Health Care Boom," notes that health care is a thriving industry, including the complementary health care professions for which Bastyr University’s educational programs provide training. Get Smart About Cholesterol
In the September 2004 issue of Natural Health magazine, Dr. Jane Guiltinan, clinical professor for Bastyr and director of Bastyr’s future Women’s Wellness Center, provided suggestions for keeping cholesterol levels healthy without taking statin drugs. Beyond exercise and better nutrition, she suggests a variety of possible herbal and nutritional supplements including niacin, red yeast rice, garlic and more. Read her suggestions.
