This 200-hour program, available to licensed acupuncturists, emphasizes hands-on learning in a series of weekend intensives and supervised clinic hours. The program is scheduled to begin in fall 2004. Find out more about this program, and be sure to tell your acupuncturist about it!

Spring Brings a Variety of Speakers to Bastyr’s “Brown Bag Lunches”
As the weather turns to spring, we’ve been learning and growing here at Bastyr! We’ve had a number of great presentations at the university. On April 19, the co-directors of the Flower Essence Society (and authors of Flowers that Heal: How to Use Flower Essences) presented a lecture, and on April 21, Bastyr graduate Dr. John Catanzaro discussed his new book, Cancer: An Integrative Approach. Naturopathic physician Susan Roberts talked about her book, Naturopathic Pediatric Essentials on April 28. And on May 12, our nutrition graduate Cherie Calboum demonstrated juicing techniques from The Juice Lady’s Guide to Juicing for Health: The Healing Power of Whole Fruits and Vegetables.  Keep up on our presentations by checking our Web site.

Bastyr Hosts Successful “Life in Balance” Nutrition Conference
Fitness enthusiasts culled wisdom about the latest in sports nutrition at the “Nutrition for Fitness: Life in Balance” conference, which was held Saturday, April 24. World health agencies are trying to acquire 100 million doses of a Chinese herbal drug called Artemisinin, which has proven effective against malaria. Bastyr Professor Speaks on NPR’s Morning Edition About Herbs
On May 10, NPR's “Morning Edition” (which has 13 million listeners and is NPR's most popular show) ran a story featuring Bastyr professor Dr. Jane Guiltinan and the research she has been involved with on herbal alternatives for menopause symptoms. The five-minute story aired twice on 600 NPR stations in the U.S. (including both KUOW and KPLU, locally) and many more around the world.   Get the story here, and scroll down to “Researchers Study Herbal Relief for Menopause Symptoms.”

Utne Magazine Highlights Naturopathic Medicine
Check out the May/June issue of Utne magazine, and find the article called “The Naturopathic Way.” The article provides a wonderful overview of naturopathic medicine, its philosophy, its history and its important place in the health care mileu. While acknowledging that some critics dismiss natural medicine due to its lack of scientific backing, the author points out that the NIH is funding many studies to help rectify that. “One thing is certain,” the author states, “With managed care limiting medical visits, consumers are looking for alternatives.”
