| The Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center (BIORC) opened in February 2009 with the goals of improving the quality of life of people living with cancer, reducing their risk of cancer recurrence and tracking the effectiveness of complementary, alternative and integrative therapies in treating the disease. BIORC was made possible through a grant from Cleavage Creek Cellars founder Budge Brown, who lost his wife to breast cancer and has since donated a percentage of his gross sales to breast cancer research.

At 8:30 on a Tuesday morning I dropped off a package in a coworker's office. It was a corner office on a higher floor with a spectacular view of the Statue of Liberty and, in the distance, the Jersey City skyline. I looked forward to a meeting in that same office later in the morning, so I could continue to admire the view. But at 8:46 a.m., I knew my meeting would be canceled. And by 9:56 a.m., no one would ever see that view again.
