Through concentration on breath work (pranayama) and the focus on postures (asana), Hatha Yoga unfolds as a powerful means towards self-discovery and personal fitness. This class serves as an introduction for beginners as well as a practice enhancer for more experienced yogis. You are encouraged to practice the yoga poses at your own level of comfort.
Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:
- Bring awareness to your physical body through the focus on breath
- Gently guide your body into poses that are appropriate for your level of fitness
- Demonstrate standing and forward bending poses
- Demonstrate seated twists and reclining hamstring stretches
- Demonstrate non-weight bearing inversions
- Perform a blend of seated, standing, inverted, and reclined Hatha yoga positions with grace and ease
Lisa Schmidt, CYT, RYT
Lisa began her yoga training in 1986 and has continued her practice for more than 25 years to feel at home in her body. An inspiring and encouraging teacher, she is committed to using her knowledge of yoga and nutrition to help people access the personal health and wellness that they deserve.
Lisa teaches a weekly Hatha Yoga class with a special focus on foundational yoga poses and relaxation. Her style is anatomically focused and alignment-based, with roots in the Iyengar tradition. She is a graduate of Pacific Yoga’s 500-hour teacher training program and has more than 20 years of experience working in health care and health management, including several years at Weight Watchers.
Lisa is grateful for the teachings of her yoga mentors, Theresa Elliott and Kathryn Payne. Prior to moving to the Seattle area in 2001, Lisa studied extensively in the San Francisco Bay area with Rodney Yee, Richard Rosen, Judith Lasater and Robert Gray. She has been blessed with a yoga life full of amazing instructors who have helped her realize the teacher within.
Lisa is a trained meditator and has practiced mindfulness meditation for several years. She incorporates mindfulness into yoga classes to bring focus and attention to the body. Lisa specializes in mindfulness-based eating strategies, and helps coach individuals into more ordered eating patterns.
As a continual seeker of new knowledge, Lisa is a graduate student of nutrition and clinical health psychology at Bastyr University. She specializes in behavioral health change with a clinical focus on disordered eating and chronic illness. When she’s not in the studio or in class at Bastyr, Lisa works as a private health coach, yoga instructor for the YMCA, a mental health counseling intern for Sound Mental Health, and writes a blog on health, nutrition, weight loss and wellness called “Seattle is Well.” Lisa can be reached at email@example.com.
Yoga mats, blankets, blocks and straps provided but you may wish to bring your own. Please bring one to three “yoga blankets,” and wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing.
Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 15. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
