The strength of our digestive process largely determines our state of health. Do you or your clients suffer from digestive complaints such as heart burn, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, lethargy or weight gain? Are you at a loss for what foods to eat or recommend for these common complaints? Ayurveda is a 10,000-year-old science which looks at each person as a unique individual and encompasses the cycles of life and the seasons. This class will take the mystery out of determining what foods are right for you and your clients! Nov 15, Sat, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Instructor: Kael Balizer (4.75 CEUs, CMEs, CPEUs, PDAs)

How and when we eat our food is as important as what we are putting in our bodies.  We will explore the importance of experiencing all six tastes in our diet, keeping our ‘agni’ (digestive fire) strong, practicing daily rhythms, and attuning our senses toward the subtler energetics of food, spices and herbs. Learn how specific foods affect our constitution (unique balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha) - physically, emotionally and mentally.

Description: Through listening to our body’s messages and connecting to nature and our food, nourishing our body and digestion is a natural, simple and delightful experience.  Beyond just chemistry and physiology, Ayurveda awakens a reverence for nourishing the body that tantalizes our senses and spirit. In this seminar you can look forward to experiencing vedic practices to strengthen digestion, tasting foods, grinding spices and receiving recipes and menus to get started.

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Describe the qualities of Vata, Pitta and Kapha individuals
  • Identify the appropriate foods and spices based on their associated qualities to balance Vata, Pitta and Kapha individuals
  • List dietary guidelines for optimal nourishment and digestion
  • Use the Ayurvedic healing principle of like increases like and the opposite balances for yourself and your clients

Meals: One hour lunch break - Bring a sack lunch or eat in Bastyr's dining commons.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room # 284. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.

Audience: The seminar content has been designed for licensed health care professionals; however, the general public is invited to attend as well.
