A large body of scientific evidence indicates that endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) that mimic estrogen contribute to the increased incidence of breast cancer in women and decreased fertility in men. These dangerous chemicals are everywhere in our life, and include pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, bisphenol-A, phthalates, perfluorinated compounds, and many more. Find out where they are, what they do to our bodies, and how to avoid them in our work and home life. Feb 1, Sat, 9a.m.-5p.m., Frances Solomon, PhD. 6.5 CEUs, PDAs, CMEs

Prerequisite: college level biology class and college level introduction to chemistry class.

We will begin with a description of the sources, properties and mechanism of action of EDCs and exposure pathways. We will then focus on the health impacts of specific EDCs and mixtures of EDCs, primarily on humans with some examples drawn from other mammals and aquatic species (i.e., impacts on brain development, the immune defense system, metabolism, and reproductive health.) We will also discuss evidence of links between EDCs and some human cancers.

The seminar will conclude with a discussion of regulatory reform, as well as actions that we can take to reduce our exposure to EDCs. Seminar activities will include lectures, stories, a presenter “show and tell” demonstration, a video, discussions, and in-class exercises.

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Identify human activities that contribute to discharge of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) to water, air, and soil
  • Explain the properties of EDCs and their mechanism of action
  • Describe the consequences of exposure to EDCs
  • Develop a list of actions for yourself, your family and your patients to reduce exposure to endocrine disruptor chemicals

Meals: One hour lunch break – Bring a sack lunch or eat in Bastyr’s dining commons.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 280. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.

Dr. Fran Solomon is an environmental biologist with a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Rochester, NY and a master’s degree in environmental health and PhD in fisheries from the University of Washington.  She has over 25 years of experience in environmental agencies, focusing on the biological impacts of toxic water pollutants, pollution prevention and control, and cleanup of contaminated sites.

Dr. Solomon is passionate about bringing her work experience and knowledge to the classroom, and is especially passionate about educating people on the topic of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs).  She teaches short courses, and gives lectures for environmental and health care professionals and the general public in Washington State and Canada about EDCs. She has also lectured to faculty and students at Hokkaido University and Keio University in Japan. Dr. Solomon currently teaches environmental biology and environmental health at The Evergreen State College, Tacoma campus and Western Washington University, Huxley College of the Environment on the Peninsulas.  She has also taught these subjects at University of Washington (Tacoma), University of British Columbia, and Northwest University in Xi’an, China.

Dr. Solomon contributes her expertise and time to research projects for the Washington Toxics Coalition (www.watoxics.org). In 2011, she was President of the Pacific Northwest chapter of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.  Currently, she is president of the Board of Directors of the Coastal Watershed Institute.
