This will be a full sensory experience of touching, smelling and tasting teas from the top five tea producing Asian countries: China, Taiwan, Japan, Sri Lanka and India. Delight in this introduction to tea where you will learn what true tea is, where it’s grown and produced, and how it becomes white, green, oolong, black and pu’erh. We will demystify tea and empower you to explore the spectrum of tea with confidence.  You’ll learn the difference between tea and herbal tisanes and In addition, you will enjoy the fun history, myth and lore that will be shared.   This class is recommended for all people curious about tea, and is a wonderful way to share an experience with your kids, spouse, friends or social group. 

Upon completion of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Describe what true tea is (from the species Camellia sinensis) and its origin in China
  • Describe how each of white, green, oolong, black and pu’erh tea is made
  • Have a sensory memory of taste and smell of a single origin, unflavored tea of each type: white, green, oolong, black and pu’erh
  • Discuss tea’s history and advent into the west with world events over the past 400 years
  • List three basic tea plant natural compounds that influence the appeal of the steeped tea
  • Describe where to go for published research on health benefits of tea

 

Roberta Fuhr is the founder of Experience Tea Studio, a unique business focused on helping people discover true tea and expand their world through the experience of tea.  A former banker, Roberta started her own tea journey 20 years ago exploring different teas and enjoying tea as a part of life. In 2010 she decided to expand her knowledge by taking professional tea classes with The Specialty Tea Institute and is now a Certified Tea Specialist by STI.

As a tea appreciator, the one thing that frustrated Roberta and led to her developing this concept of a Tea Studio, was the lack of knowledge transfer about tea - good quality teas -what they are, how they are made, it’s history and the variety of tastes.  She formulated the idea of Experience Tea around the concept of teaching tea classes with guided tastings, empowering the average consumer to understand and appreciate good tea. Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 277. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
