Recorded Chinese medicine can be traced as far back as 221 BC. Given this, how do we see through the layers of dust and find its original meaning? The profound way to connect to ancient times is through the classics, for they capture the essence of this ancient medicine. This seminar is designed to give experienced acupuncturists as well as AOM students an in-depth understanding of Chinese medicine and the ancient healing concepts of ying-yang, wu xing, zang xiang, and meridians through a historic journey into the Huang Di Nei Jing and Shang Han Lun ancient texts. Yin yang, wu xing, zang xiang, and meridians are “concepts” we are familiar with, but do these truly guide our diagnosis and treatment in practice? Often times we are more focused on how to make magic with the individual functions of acupuncture points or herbal formulas rather than realizing how they apply on a larger scale. These terms are not merely principles in text books, they exist as living elements in the world outside of the person.  Case studies and visual diagrams will assist your complete comprehension, leaving you with clear ideas on how to distinguish good health in your clients and which direction to take in your diagnosis for the desired results.

Upon completion of this seminar you will be able to:

  • Describe the structure and function of yin yang
  • Describe how to study the Neijing and Shang Han Lun classics
  • Apply differentiation diagnosis with an in-depth understanding using yin yang thinking
  • List the differences between eight principles diagnosis, zang fu diagnosis and six channel diagnoses
  • Describe how to choose and analyze herbal formulas and acupuncture points based on the expanded understanding of these ancient texts

Hong Yu, DAOM, LAc graduated as a DAOM from Bastyr University in 2008, and received a degree in Chinese Medicine from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology in 1996.She was raised in a family where her father dedicated his life to the literature of ancient China and her mother worked in a Chinese medicine hospital.  The Classics were part of her childhood.

She is currently supervising clinic shifts for master and doctoral students at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health, is serving as a Chinese medicine physician at Bastyr Integrated Oncology Research Center, and  teaches a TCM diagnosis lab class for masters students.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 55. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
