Explore the varied and multi-dimensional therapeutic effects of essential oils. Essential oils are secondary metabolites developed within plants through an evolutionary process to protect and heal the plant from damage, predators and micro-organisms. Through an in-depth analysis of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immune modulating, sedative, cell regenerative and other categories of healing properties, you will explore the full potential of medicinal essential oil use (including safety and precautions).

The seminar is 20 hours (17 CEUs or PDAs), and includes 17 hours of classroom experience and three hours of self-study. Classroom experience will include lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice. In addition to the “kit of essential oils” you purchased from the instructor in the Chemistry and Biology class, he will supply additional materials, bases and oils for the weekend activities – approx. $45 value).

Topics include:

• The multi-function properties and activity of plant secondary metabolites
• Categories of therapeutic properties exhibited by secondary metabolites
• A review of research and clinical studies
• Contraindications, sensitivities and other precautions of essential oil use
• Treating conditions associated with the autonomic and central nervous systems
• Energetic (i.e. chi, life force) properties of essential oils
• Integrating holistic and allopathic methodologies
• 25 conditions and associated essential oil selection

 Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

• Identify 10 therapeutic property categories of essential oils
• Define the properties and activity of an essential oil in relation to its molecular components
• Find available research and sources for supporting therapeutic claims
• Use essential oils appropriately with emphasis on efficacious and safe application
• Select essential oils consistent with their pharmacological properties
• Select essential oils consistent with their holistic properties and energetic identities
• Select and understand essential oils in relation to the multi-function activity of secondary metabolites

Jimm Harrison, Cosmetologist and Certified Aromatherapist, founded the Phytotherapy Institute in 1995 to advance education in essential oil and plant therapy. He was the first cosmetologist invited by Harvard University and MIT to discuss the impact of essential oils in skin care. Harrison has been conducting certification programs and lectures in essential oil therapy for accredited massage, spa therapy, cosmetology and medical esthetic institutions across the country since 1993, including the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He is the author of Aromatherapy: Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils for Esthetics, and has developed natural/organic skin care products for the professional and retail markets. Assignments: Aromatherapy: Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils for Esthetics. Prior to class read Chapters 6 & 7, and answer review questions at the end of each chapter before attending the first day.

Required: Bring your kit of  essential oils representing each functional group and fragrance category.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room  76. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.
