This presentation will identify recent research in evolutionary and cellular biology which demonstrates a rather surprising variety of anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects of Asian essential oils and extracts, especially from Asian spices. The cultural background and potential therapeutic applications for selected examples will also be discussed. Sept 10, Wed, 5:30-9 p.m. Instructors: Kurt Schnaubelt and Jimm Harrison. Description: Essential oils are uncomplicated sources of secondary plant metabolites. Asian essential oils, especially resins and rhyzomes, generally provide heavier sesquiterpenoid and phenylpropanoid components, giving rise to their unique spectrum of health benefits. We will explore the important role of Asian aromatics in the area of metabolic and degenerative diseases, which are among major health concerns globally.

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Describe plant secondary metabolites and their function in human health
  • List five “Western” uses of essential oils common in aromatherapy
  • Explain how sesquiterpenoid and phenylpropanoid compounds give Asian oils a unique health benefits
  • List six Asian essential oils and their health benefits in aromatherapy

Kurt Schnaubelt, PhD is founder and scientific director of Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy (PIA). PIA is organizer of a successful international conference on scientific aromatherapy where the exchange between science and aromatherapy always provides new impulses

Kurt is also the author of numerous books in the field of aromatherapy including Advanced Aromatherapy and The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils

Presenting internationally on aromatherapy Kurt blends an applications-oriented practice with formal science. He has appeared in international venues and events such as CFA, Forum Essenzia, IFPA, NAHA, Veroma, VägA, Fragrance Journal, ICEOFF, WOCMAP and AAIC.

 Jimm Harrison, Cosmetologist and Certified Aromatherapist, founded the Phytotherapy Institute in 1995 to advance education in essential oil and plant therapy. He was the first cosmetologist invited by Harvard University and MIT to discuss the impact of essential oils in skin care. Harrison has been conducting certification programs and lectures in essential oil therapy for accredited massage, spa therapy, cosmetology and medical esthetic institutions across the country since 1993, including the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He is the author of Aromatherapy: Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils for Esthetics, and has developed natural/organic skin care products for the professional and retail markets.
