Essential oils provide a full spectrum of healthy aging effects, skin healing properties, and skin conditioning and maintenance. This seminar will provide you with the skills to use aromatherapy for personal care and in the spa setting. The “beauty inside and out” system will be introduced to help you establish a holistic and integrative approach to health and beauty. June 6-8: Fri, 4-8p.m. - Sat & Sun, 9:30a.m.-5:30p.m. Instructor: Jimm Harrison, Cosmetologist & Certified Aromatherapist. (17 CEUs, PDAs)

Prerequisites: Aromatherapy – Foundations, and Aromatherapy - Chemistry & Biology

Required Textbooks & Assignments: Aromatherapy: Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils for Esthetics. Prior to class read Chapters 1, 10 & 11, and answer review questions at the end of each chapter before attending the first day.

  • Skin physiology and anatomy
  • Chemistry and the Structure-Effect Diagram for skin
  • Application methods for skin and spa
  • Defining “natural” skin care products
  • Quality skin care products vs. marketing programs
  • Four main ingredient categories; surfactants, emulsifiers, functional and actives
  • The “beauty inside and out” system
  • 20 specific skin conditions and essential oil remedies
  • Four complete formulas for skin types
  • Six spa formulations for wraps, masks, scrubs, lotions, massage and pedicures

Upon completion of the seminar you will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between health and beauty
  • Develop a protocol for skin care based on holistic and integrative strategies
  • Define the layers and functions of the skin
  • Use the Structure-Effect Diagram to select essential oils for skin and beauty
  • Describe and make use of 10 application methods for skin, spa and beauty
  • Develop a useful definition of “natural” ingredients
  • Identify ten common synthetic ingredients and their function in cosmetics
  • Identify 15 natural ingredients and their function in cosmetics
  • Explain the properties of 13 essential oils for their use in skin care and beauty
  • Define surfactants, emulsifiers, functional and actives, and name at least five ingredients for each category
  • Define the “beauty inside and out” system
  • Explain the synergistic use of diet and supplements for beauty and skin
  • Identify four phytochemical groups and their properties that are beneficial to skin and beauty
  • List 10 foods and their benefit to skin and beauty
  • Define “superfoods” and list 10 that are beneficial to skin and beauty
  • Identify 15 nutrients found in supplements, their topical application, and their benefit to skin and beauty
  • Use essential oils for skin, spa, beauty and cosmetics according to state and federal regulations, individual scope of practice, confidentiality of client and ethics

The course is 20 hours in length, and includes 17 hours of classroom experience and three hours of self-study. Classroom experience will include lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice.

Please Bring: Bring your kit of 13 essential oils representing each functional group and fragrance category. The instructor will supply additional materials, bases and oils for the weekend activities (approx. $45 value).

Meals: Fri - 1/2 hour dinner break - bring a sack meal and drink.  Sat/Sun - one hour lunch break - bring a sack lunch or eat in Bastyr's dining commons.

Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus, room 1011. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.

Audience: The seminar content has been designed for licensed health care professionals; however, the general public is invited to attend as well.

Jimm Harrison, Cosmetologist and Certified Aromatherapist
Jimm Harrison, cosmetologist and certified aromatherapist, founded the Phytotherapy Institute in 1995 to advance education in essential oil and plant therapy. He was the first cosmetologist invited by Harvard University and MIT to discuss the impact of essential oils in skin care. Harrison has been conducting certification programs and lectures in essential oil therapy for accredited massage, spa therapy, cosmetology and medical esthetic institutions across the country since 1993, including the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He is the author of Aromatherapy: Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils for Esthetics, and has developed natural/organic skin care products for the professional and retail markets.
