Proposed New On-Campus Housing
Bastyr students come from all over Washington, the United States and the world. Many of them, especially those from out-of-state, prefer on-campus housing. With only 42 on-campus rooms currently available at Bastyr, most of our students must find off-campus housing in Kenmore and the greater Seattle area. Finding appropriate and convenient student housing can be challenging, and increased commutes to and from campus add to traffic congestion on Juanita Drive and other nearby roads. Looking at other colleges and universities, we know that student housing will have a positive effect on our communities and that traffic and pollution from commuting vehicles will be reduced.
To increase student housing options and help alleviate transportation impact on surrounding roads, Bastyr University is currently in the planning process to construct low impact two-story, on-campus residences to house 120 students. The eco-friendly residences, connected by a series of garden paths, courtyards and outdoor living spaces, are carefully designed to be energy-efficient and to fit into and enhance our campus’ natural environment.
To build the residences, Bastyr must first secure a conditional use permit (CUP) from the city of Kenmore. The CUP relates and adheres to our current zoning – “Residential (R-4)/ Special Study Area” and will be sought at the beginning of the revised master plan process.
