History
The Simkin Center has been educating and inspiring childbrith professionals since 1988, when it was founded as part of the Seattle Midwifery School, and both of which are now part of Bastyr University near Seattle. Graduates of the Birth Doula Workshop founded PALS Doulas, a professional organization providing peer support, continuing education, doula certification and referrals.
Using PALS Doulas' organizational model, doulas around the country joined together to found DONA International. Simkin Center was the first organization to be granted DONA approval for curriculum and faculty. Simkin Center has educated, prepared and inspired more than 5,700 birth and postpartum doulas, childbirth educators and lactation educators since its inception.
Simkin Center Educational Model
Faculty Excellence – Simkin Center instructors have prepared thousands of birth and postpartum doulas, childbirth and lactation educators and other childbirth professions.
Team teaching – Each workshop features two instructors in the workshop at all times. This model provides continuous learning experiences for instructors as well as students. Team teaching also allows instructors to model compassion, support and communication.
Internationally recognized and continuously improved curriculum – Workshop curricula are continuously improved, and reviewed annually, thanks to Simkin Center faculty staff.
Student Focus – We “doula” Simkin Center students. Attention to students, from the first inquiry through the program and into introduction to practice, sets Simkin Center apart from other programs.
