Tom Kloss, ND ('00)
Kirkland, WA
How is natural medicine accepted in your region?
Very well. I am in Kirkland, Washington and have licensing privileges.
What do you find to be the most interesting aspect of practicing?
Meeting the patients and hearing their life situations. I enjoy trying to figure out what will motivate them to make the necessary changes towards better health. It's like putting a puzzle together.
What are your overall marketing strategies?
I gave talks in the local area. I also made sure that I did an excellent job with each patient so that they would refer their friends and family members to me. I initially placed an ad in the yellow pages but have not benefited from it and have therefore discontinued the ad.
What keeps you motivated to practice?
Patient progress. I have to believe that what we do as natural practitioners really works. Our job is to convince and inspire our patients to see it in their own lives.
What's next for you? Where would you like to place your energies?
I think that all doctors need to be involved in their own personal evolution. As our practice grows, we need to expand our capacity to relate and match our patient's capacity.
What would you like to see from Bastyr University?
I would like to see scholarships and grants awarded to those students who have to borrow the full tuition amount. Such financial aid may reduce the burden of living in poverty while attending school.
What types of CEU topics would you be interested in seeing Bastyr host?
Seminars by chiropractors on adjusting; nutrition lectures; case management. Speakers should be experienced practitioners versus recent graduates.
What would it take for you to get totally excited about returning to campus (or attend NE) reunion?
Good speakers, good food, and keep the program short - not and all-day affair.
What are some of your interests/hobbies outside of healing?
Running, hiking, camping, listening to Jazz music, and cooking.
