Spring is always an intense time on campus. It amazes me how much apprehension everyone feels – students, faculty and administrators all feel the pressure. The march toward the end of the academic year and graduation is a tradition that all academic institutions experience; the excitement and anticipation are especially evident among members of the graduating class.
Many students don’t realize when they choose Bastyr University they are choosing to be part of a community that will extend throughout their lifetime. Many have a difficult time envisioning the transition to alumni. They know they are no longer students, but the next classification is always hard to grasp.
It is our responsibility to make the transition from student to alumnus a positive and welcoming one. One of our new goals is to begin and build strong connections to students while they are on campus – simultaneously with the school as well as with alums. This model allows us to grow and retain the relationships as they make the transition from student to graduate. With that in mind, I am happy to introduce Ms. Laura Stevens who recently joined our team as a work-study student for the Alumni Association. Please spend some moments reading her letter below.
Sincerely,
Tom Bull

MESSAGE FROM LAURA STEVENS, FUTURE ALUM
Dear Bastyr Alumni Community,
I am a second year ND student having made my way out to the Seattle area from New England. As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a doctor, but because of my limited exposure to naturopathic medicine, I set my sights on allopathic medical school.
My own health struggles in high school and college led me to seek out naturopathic physicians, acupuncturists, and drastically different nutrition and exercise regiments. Thanks to the support of many nurturing practitioners, I am not only the healthiest I have felt in my adult life (so far), but I also changed my life’s path and I am now enrolled in Bastyr’s dual track (ND/AOM) program. I couldn’t be happier.
Having come from a competitive pre-med undergraduate program at Brown University followed by a few years in academic research at Harvard’s Osher Institute for research in CAM, I never imagined that medical school could be so physically, emotionally, and spiritually supportive.
I am currently a member of Bastyr’s Student Council and I am also working in the Alumni Relations office with the new Alumni Director, Tom Bull. Having come from institutions with strong alumni networks, I would like to see Bastyr’s alumni network grow and change into one that is more supportive for both the alumni themselves, as well as the current students. You are a tremendous resource of experience and knowledge that can benefit the entire alumni community as well as future graduates like me and my classmates. Please be in touch, and let us know what we can do to develop greater resources and connections.
Sincerely,
Laura Stevens
Future Bastyr Alum ‘11
