Prerequisite Changes for 2007
If you’re planning to attend Bastyr starting in 2007 or 2008, please note a few changes to our prerequisite requirements. Starting fall 2007, an intermediate algebra class is required for entrance into all programs (except the ND program). College algebra is strongly encouraged for all programs, especially for students thinking of graduate school. And starting in 2008, those entering the herbal sciences program will need to have an Introduction to Botany class under their belts. Find out more (and check back frequently for updates).

Explore Bastyr at On-Campus Events
Interested in Bastyr’s programs, but just need a bit more information? Don’t miss a great opportunity at our upcoming Evening at Bastyr on Thursday, November 16, from 6:30-8:30. You will have a chance to talk to department faculty, current students and Bastyr representatives to learn more about admissions, financial aid, housing and student activities. If you miss that event, our open house will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2007, where you can also take a campus tour and attend some informational sessions. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details about both of these events or call the admissions department at (425) 602-3330.

Recruiting Schedule Now Available – We’re on the Road!
If you live in a region of the country besides the Northwest, you don’t have to fly there in order to decide if our programs are right for you. Our admissions advisors can come to you! We are traveling around the country this fall to answer your questions and provide you with more information about Bastyr and its programs. Check out the recruiting schedule to find out when we’ll be at a location near you.

Tour Bastyr’s Hair-Raising Haunted Trails
Think Bastyr is all about feel-good, healing activities? Guess again! Student council hosts an annual fundraising event with a more sinister flavor: Bastyr University’s Haunted Trails. This popular event is a hair-raising tour through the dark and eerie haunted forest trails of St. Edward State Park, right behind Bastyr’s campus. Or, for younger children, Children’s Halloween Story Time provides merely a mild scare. Find out more about the dates, times and prices for this event.

Bastyr Keeps Students Technologically Fit
Even though Bastyr is all about natural health, we don’t shy away from technology. Our Department of Information Technology works hard to secure the resources students need to stay up-to-date. We issue email addresses to all students and alumni, provide access to many computer terminals, offer a wealth of database resources through our library, as well as wireless Internet access throughout the campus and teaching clinic. Read more about Bastyr’s technology resources.

Attendees Applaud “Bastyr Connection” Event
Our summer admissions event, The Bastyr Connection, was a great success, with 79 people in attendance. The event, which took place on August 24, gave prospective students a chance to talk with students, staff and faculty to get the “inside scoop” about Bastyr. In a follow-up survey, over 90 percent of attendees said the day helped them to make a decision to apply to Bastyr. Eighty seven percent said the event met or exceeded their expectations, and 82 percent rated faculty, staff and students as approachable. One attendee stated, “I loved all the people available to answer questions and just talk about the programs and the school a whole. It was very familial and warm.” We hope to see you at our fall and winter events!

Program Highlights

Bastyr Announces New Developments in Health Psychology Curriculum
Bastyr now offers an even more well-rounded program in mind-body psychology. Starting in 2007, our BS in health psychology now has two tracks: general health psychology; and psychology and human biology (pre-medical studies) with an optional summer massage intensive. Both tracks now include an in-depth exploration of spirituality and health. The first track is a great choice to prepare for further degrees in psychology and the pre-med track is perfect preparation for further study in the biomedical fields. Find out more about this program.

Bastyr Nutrition Researchers Awarded Grant
A $225,000 grant was recently awarded to investigators at Bastyr University to study whether regular consumption of legumes (beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas) may help with weight control and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Bastyr researcher Dr. Megan McCrory is the principal investigator and lead author of the grant. Read more about the study.

New Grant Gives ND Students Better Research Training
Bastyr University has recently been awarded a significant research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) entitled: Naturopathic Physician Research Education Project (N-PREP). This grant will allow Bastyr to develop the curriculum needed to enhance the research training of students. The study will be led by Bastyr’s dean of the School of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Gannady Raskin, who will collaborate with a group of Bastyr researchers and partner with a group of faculty at the University of Washington. Find out more about this grant.

Why Choose Bastyr?

"Our new clinical training facility is one of the major highlights of Bastyr’s education. Students learn how to deliver patient care in a beautiful yet functional space that patients love to visit. We have taken great care to build the facility with environmentally friendly materials and systems, making the clinic a healthy place for students, staff and patients."

-Jamey Wallace, ND, Director of Bastyr Center for Natural Health
