Tamara Cullen, ND ('99)
Naturopathic Medicine alumna
Bastyr University changed my life, and now I’m changing other people's lives. In my private practice, I make a huge difference with my patients and I love it! I focus my practice on pediatrics, and I feel like I impact children's health early on, which then improves the whole family's lifelong health.
The beauty of my Bastyr education is that it trained me to find the cause of health problems instead of treating symptoms. I am able to keep children off antibiotics because I discover what is behind health problems such as chronic ear or sinus infections. I spend more time with patients, which allows me to do the investigative work — and that makes all the difference. I am constantly playing detective. I ask myself questions such as: "Why has he had three infections this year? Is sugar affecting his immunity? Is underlying inflammation at the root of this?" Treating the cause stops the cycle of illness. That definitely sets this kind of medicine apart.
Another great thing about Bastyr is that it's so eclectic. That is why I have so many different healing tools now. I utilize herbal medicine, nutritional medicine and homeopathy, and I know when to refer people to specialists. I feel very well-rounded in many therapeutic areas, and this makes me a better doctor.
