I came to Bastyr University because of the students. Prior to coming here, I had supervised Bastyr student interns at another facility. Bastyr students asked me challenging questions that other interns from around the country did not. They had a passion for this field. When I learned that there was a position open in the School of Nutrition and Exercise Science at Bastyr University, I said, "I want to be a part of that."
My role at Bastyr University is divided between serving as dietetic internship director and teaching nutrition assessment courses. My personal mission is to support the creation of extraordinary nutrition professionals. The skills that students receive here will prepare them to serve in both conventional medical and naturopathic settings, providing exceptional care to patients in both worlds.
Because of their experience working with patients at Bastyr Center for Natural Health as part of their curriculum, our students have an edge when they graduate. I am not aware of any other place where master's level students get to directly practice patient care. To see students progress from tentatively approaching their first patient to interacting confidently with patients to support effective lifestyle changes is such a wonderful opportunity.
Working at Bastyr has allowed me to work in an environment of like-minded individuals. I like being around people who honor nature. I like the way students challenge me and express themselves openly. It has motivated me to continue my professional development. Their passion and expertise are so needed in this world, and it is an honor to train them.
