Student Involvement in Research

Student Research

"My course of study at Bastyr gave me knowledge on a wide spectrum of topics about nutrition, natural products and holistic health. In my work at an integrated cancer care clinic, this made it possible for me to contribute to the treatment of a broad range of patients. Research skills learned in the thesis process taught me how to obtain and critically review research literature."

Betsy Wingren, MS ('97), RD, DPD ('96), Dietetic Intern ('97) Former Nutrition Counselor
Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center
Seattle, WA

A research orientation is encouraged at Bastyr, and training in research skills for students is provided in several ways. Suitable applicants are solicited and screened for the work-study positions allocated to Research at Bastyr. Volunteer positions are also available. Students have taken active roles as investigators and research assistants. They participate in a wide variety of roles, including the opportunity to assist in writing papers for publications. The one required research related course in the NM Program curriculum is Research Methods and Design. A new course being implemented in conjunction with the Tierney Laboratory will teach students on basic laboratory methods in natural medicine research. Independent study courses are available with separate focus on proposal development, data collection, and report writing. Research faculty are generally available for consultation to students or simply to discuss their ideas.
