The Bastyr Medicinal Herb Garden
We have a beautiful, organic garden at Bastyr University that is maintained by the students. The garden features:
- Medicinal herbs
- Culinary herbs
- Vegetables
- Flowers
- Grains
- Reflexology path
- Gazebo and pond
The garden is, in part, a teaching tool for various departments at Bastyr. Students the naturopathic and oriental medicine programs as well as herbal sciences study the herbs and frequently harvest them from the garden to make tinctures and salves. The herbs are also used in our teaching kitchen and our cafeteria.
Recently special food waste composters were added to handle all the cafeteria leftovers, which are then used in the garden. Students are also experimenting with compost teas and different mulches. The students' enthusiasm is contagious, especially when you hear their plans to incorporate swales, solar powered greenhouses and other cutting edge sustainable technologies to "close the loop."
Anyone is welcome to drop by the garden for a self-guided tour and enjoy its beauty. Find a map and get directions to campus.
