Bastyr University seeks to provide a comprehensive benefits package for all eligible employees who are employed for 20 hours or more per week. The following is a brief description of the benefits available:

Health/Dental/Vision Insurance

Contributory (employee pays part of the premium)


Preferred Plan: Employee chooses providers from the First Choice Network of Preferred Provider list. The University contributes a smaller amount towards the coverage for Spouse/Registered Domestic Partner and Dependent Child(ren).

Traditional Plan: Employee may go to any providers of their choice and has a higher premium than the Preferred plan.  Coverage for Spouse/Registered Domestic Partner and Dependent Child(ren) is paid 100% by the employee.

Both Medical Plans include:

  • 100% coverage for preventive medical care; deductible waived
  • No deductible on covered prescription drugs; 50% coverage at pharmacy; 85% coverage for mail delivery of maintenance prescriptions.
  • 30 annual Team Care and Resident Care visits at Bastyr Center for Natural Health and Campus Shifts paid at 100% for those enrolled in healthcare insurance, $25 co-pay for those not enrolled.  (Excludes lab, x-rays, supplies, and dispensary)
  • 100% paid coverage for midwifery services and birthing center
  • 75% paid coverage for doctor office visits and hospital care including limited complementary and alternative providers, spinal manipulation, major medical, home health care, mental health, substance abuse and more
  • $250 calendar year deductible on medical; Maximum $750 per family


No deductible for preventive dental care; $50 calendar year deductible on other dental care.  $1,750 per year maximum benefit.


$200 per year vision benefit; no deductible

To be eligible an affidavit must be signed by the couple.

Paid Leave

Pro-rated for less than full time

  • Staff Vacation First year = 96 hours; 2nd-4th year = 120 hours; 5th – 9th year = 160 hours; 10th year and beyond = 200 hours per year
  • Faculty Vacation First – 9th year = 160 hours; 9th year and beyond = 200 hours per year
  • Paid Holidays 7 individual days (56 hours) plus Winter Closure December 24th through January 1st each year based on scheduled work hours
  • Personal holiday  8 hours per fiscal year
  • Sick leave 96 hours per year
  • Wellness Conversion sick leave to wellness conversion hours on 2:1 basis for staff only (not for Faculty or Residents)
  • Paid Jury duty full pay for duration when court check is signed over to the Finance Department
  • Bereavement Leave 3 to 5 days of paid leave for death of close family member
  • All non-benefit eligible employees earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 72 hours


  • Direct Deposit of Paycheck

Miscellaneous Benefits

  • Bastyr Class Tuition Credit/Free Class
    • Core Faculty and Staff employees may take up to 9 credits per Academic Year after one year of benefits-eligibility
    • Adjunct Faculty may take 3 or 9 credits per Academic Year depending on teaching load
  • Core Faculty and Staff Massage Benefit with $15 co-pay          
  • Bastyr Bookstore Discount (10%) on regularly priced items
  • Bastyr Center for Natural Health Discount 10% off on employee prescriptions. Does not include Chinese Dispensary
  • Counseling In-house  for 3 sessions at $20 each.  Can extend treatment using Bastyr's Preferred Provider insurance coverage
  • Bastyr Library Borrowing Privileges
  • Discounted Rates available through Conference Services for rental of meeting rooms and use of chapel for weddings
  • Bastyr University FREE exercise classes sponsored by the Human Resource Department for benefit eligible employees
  • Lactation Rooms available. Room 529 on the WA Campus (see Student Resources Center for key), room N172 at the Seattle Clinic and room 223 on the CA Campus.
